GENERAL INFOMATION

In the speech at the Closing Ceremony of the Second National Conference of Solid State Physics organized by Vietnam Physical Society (VPS) in Do Son, July 1997, the President of VPS has suggested to the Vietnam physics community to study Nanophysics, a promising new development direction of modern physics. Five years after Do Son Conference, the First International Workshop on Nanophysics and Nanotechnology IWNN 2002 was co-organized in Hanoi by VPS and Institute of Materials Science (IMS) of Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology (VAST) with the participation of the scientists from USA, Japan, Korea and Vietnam. Two years after, the Second International Workshop on Nanophysics and Nanotechnology IWNN 2004 was held again in Hanoi also with the participation of the scientists from above-mentioned countries.

The program of Nanophysics has attracted the attention of Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST) of Vietnam. With the promotion of MOST a new promising interdisciplinary research field of science and technology – Nanoscience and Nanotechnology – has gradually emerged. In the year 2004 VPS and IMS have decided to extend IWNN into the Third International Workshop on Advanced Materials Science and Nanotechnology IWAMSN 2006, which was held in Ha Long City, with the participation of a large number scientists not only from USA, Japan, Korea and Vietnam, but also from many other countries.

For contributing to the enhancement of the scientific cooperation between ASEAN countries, APCTP has decided to cooperate with Vietnam physics community to organize the Fourth International Workshop on Advanced Materials Science and Nanotechnology IWAMSN 2008 in Nha Trang with following title: APCTP – ASEAN Workshop on Advanced Materials Science and Nanotechnology. The Second Korea – Vietnam Joint Symposium of Quantum Photonics and Nanotechnology was also held in Nha Trang at the same time as a satellite conference of IWAMSN 2008. APCTP – ASEAN Workshop on Advanced Materials Science and Nanotechnology opened a new period for the cooperation between materials scientists of ASEAN countries.

On the occasion of the National Celebration of the 1000th Anniversary of the foundation of the Thang Long – Hanoi Capital of Vietnamese people, the Fifth International Workshop on Advanced Materials Science and Nanotechnology IWAMSN 2010 was held in Hanoi together with the Fourth Korea – Vietnam Joint Symposium on Quantum Photonics and Nanotechnology as its satellite conference. A large number of scientists from many friendly countries have attended IWAMSN 2010 to share the sheer joy of Vietnamese materials scientists and to enhance the scientific cooperation with them.

Recently MOST has decided to start a new strategy to develop the international scientific cooperation of Vietnam. As a first step in the implementation of this strategy VPS and IMS have proposed to MOST and VAST as well as to invite NIMS to co-organize the Sixth International Workshop on Advanced Materials Science and Nanotechnology IWAMSN 2012. This proposal has been accepted. VPS and IMS continue to bear the responsibility the local Co-organizers of the Workshop together with the Department of International Cooperation of MOST. The traditional Korea – Vietnam Joint Symposium also will be held as a satellite conference of IWAMSN 2012.

With the active participation of Japanese polymer scientists, the scientific areas of IWAMSN 2012 are enlarged in comparison with the previous Workshops. It includes four topics and consists four corresponding Sections:

  1. Materials for Electronics and Photonics (code: MEP)
  2. Nanostructured Materials and Devices (code: NMD)
  3. Nanotechnology in Life Science and Environment Technology (code: NLE)
  4. Soft Matter and Polymer Science (code: SMPS)
